ROMEO AND JULIET - A BIG SUCCESS!
29th May 2017

We're pleased to say that Romeo and Juliet at Lincoln Drill Hall was a great success, both artistically and financially. We sold 440 tickets over three productions and managed to make a small profit, but most importantly the feedback on the production was very positive indeed.

Many thanks to everyone who put in so much hard work to create such a fantastic production, and to everyone who came to see the show. We appreciate your support!

ANOTHER AUDITION FOR IN CAMERA
1st May 2017

We are holding another audition for In Camera - must be a record by now! - as we need a new Inez.

An audition for the role will take place at 7.30pm on Wednesday 24th May in the community room at Tesco Extra on Wragby Road. The room is located near the stairs to the cafe at the back of the store.

Inez can be played by a woman of any age, but the part best suits an older actress (30+). The play will be staged in The Room Upstairs at Lincoln Drill Hall from Wednesday 11th to Friday 13th October 2017.

In Camera is a play exploring relationships, self-deception and truth as three very different individuals arrive in Hell and learn to come to terms with their situation and with each other.

Inez is a middle-aged, gay woman who sees herself as tough, fairly cynical and in control of her emotions and who likes to think she has come to terms with her situation. She is quick to get the measure of the other characters and sees no reason to compromise her own position for their benefit.

If you would like to audition for this part, please contact David Thew at david@davidthew.com as soon as possible. Please also let David know if you would like to audition but can’t be available on that date.

LITTLE WOMEN AN ARTISTIC AND FINANCIAL SUCCESS!
29th October 2016

Congratulations to everyone who was involved in our autumn production of Little Women at Lincoln Drill Hall - especially first-time director Martin Noble who did a fantastic job.

We sold almost 400 tickets, the response from the audience was universally positive, everyone had fun and to cap it all we managed to make a profit of about £50 - almost unheard of for a major production of ours in the main auditorium!

NEW COMMITTEE ELECTED
18th September 2016

Thanks to the small but loyal band who attended our annual meeting on Thursday 15th September 2016.

Among other business conducted we elected a new committee, which is as follows:

The new committee is now as follows:

Chairman Jez Ashberry
Secretary Su Toogood
Treasurer Vicky Ashberry
Technical Kev Gillingham
Ordinary Member David Thew

Nick Dunnett has stepped down, though we hope he will continue to offer his invaluable support and guidance on the technical side. His place is taken by Kev Gillingham, to whom we give a hearty welcome.

With sadness we noted the passing of Gaynor Little, who was a founder member and more recently a committee member of Common Ground.

To find out what else went on at the annual meeting please email our secretary Su Toogood for a digital copy of the minutes.

LINCOLNSHIRE CO-OP COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS
10th September 2016

There's now an easy way to raise money for Common Ground and put some much-needed money in our coffers!

We're pleased to say that earlier this year we were selected with two other groups as one of Lincolnshire Co-op's Community Champions. Our area is the Winning Post, West Parade Pharmacy, City Square Pharmacy and Lucy Tower Street Pharmacy area of Lincoln for the period September to November 2016.

This means that whenever dividend card holders spend money in any of those shops some of the money will be split three ways, and we will get a third of the proceeds!

This is in addition to the arrangement which has been running all year whereby our own supporters can donate to us when using their dividend card in any Lincoln co-op shop if they have chosen us as their community group to support this year.

So please, if you can, spend some money in any of those four shops and pharmacies and we will benefit as a result! The arrangement ends on 25th November 2016.

GAYNOR LITTLE
8th September 2016

We were all heartbroken to hear about our beloved Gaynor Little, who passed away on Tuesday having been diagnosed with cancer.

Gaynor was one of our founder members and appeared in many productions, including our first in which she played the neighbour Betsy Jane in 'Spring and Port Wine'.

Gaynor was blessed with amazing talent as an actor and director and also helped to run Common Ground by serving on our committee. She was famous for her significant looks, her less than certain grip on her lines and her ability to steal whatever scene she happened to be appearing in.

We all miss her terribly and send our love and best wishes to her son Philip, who is also a talented and much admired member of our company.

Gaynor's funeral will be a service of thanksgiving conducted by Reverend Alan Coates on Wednesday 21st September at 2pm at St Wilfred's Church, Metheringham followed by a brief service at Lincoln Crematorium and on for some drinks, food, stories, smiles at the Adam & Eve in Lincoln.

Philip asks that people wear what they are most comfortable in.

We are sure you will join us in sending our heart-felt condolences to Philip. Gaynor will be sadly missed by many people.

Please do come along and get involved in the running our our theatre company, and let us know if you would like to stand for a place on our organising committee.

Set in 1936 in the village of Ballybeg, County Donegal the story follows five Mundy sisters, their brother Jack, Michael (son of one of the sisters) and Jerry (Michael’s father) over two days of Lughnasa, a festival of a pagan god of the harvest. This is a beautifully crafted story by Brian Friel, ‘one of the most accomplished playwrights working in English today’ (Michael Etherton).

We will be reading Brian Friel's play Dancing at Lughnasa on Monday 16th March with a view to producing the play at Lincoln Drill Hall in the autumn. Gaynor Little has put herself forward to direct.

Everyone is welcome to come and read; this is not an audition, just an opportunity to see how we like the play and how our Irish accents hold up!

The play is set in Ireland's County Donegal in August 1936 in the fictional town of Ballybeg. It is a memory play told from the point of view of the adult Michael Evans, the narrator. He recounts the summer in his aunts' cottage when he was seven years old.

Meet in The Kennel at the Dog & Bone pub on John Street in Lincoln (off Monks Road) for a 7.30pm start.

NEW COMMITTEE ELECTED
22nd July 2014

A new committee was elected at our annual meeting on 16th July.

Jez Ashberry continues as Chairman and Su Toogood continues as Secretary. Chris Matthews stepped down as Treasurer and is replaced by Vicky Ashberry. Lesley Hedley has temporarily stepped down owing to ill health but will return soon, we hope. Nick Dunnett was re-elected as an ordinary committee member and Janet Marshall joins the committee as fund-raising officer.

At the annual meeting we decided for the first time since our creation in 2001 to increase our membership fees. With immediate effect the annual membership fee for Common Ground Theatre Company will be £15 waged, £10 unwaged and juveniles free. We regret having to raise our prices but we have held them steady for 13 years and the finances could do with a boost!

Other decisions were taken at the meeting. If you would like to receive a copy of the minutes please email our secretary Su Toogood.

Our annual meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday 16th July 2014 in the function room behind The Victoria pub, Union Road, Lincoln LN1 3BJ.

Among the items to be discussed will be the election of the committee: currently Jez Ashberry (Chair), Su Toogood (Secretary), Chris Matthews (Treasurer), Vicky Ashberry, Nick Dunnett and Lesley Hedley.

All the posts are up for election and we would really welcome nominations, especially for the post of Treasurer as Chris Matthews is standing down.

If you are interested in standing for one of these positions or would like to know more, do please email our secretary Su Toogood.

Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting. The bar will be open. See you there!

ARABIAN NIGHTS UPDATE
16th January 2014

Rehearsals for Arabian Nights are progressing well. Inevitably with a large ensemble cast there have been a few changes to the personnel but this ambitious show is coming together nicely under the able direction of Su Toogood.

Arabian Nights - a family show but not a panto! - will be staged at Lincoln Drill Hall from 13th to 15th March 2014. Tickets are now on sale at the Drill Hall box office. Call 01522 873894 or email boxoffice@lincolndrillhall.com

FIRE AT CROFT STREET COMMUNITY CENTRE
22nd September 2013

Many of you may already have heard about the severe fire which has seriously damaged Croft Street Community Centre in Lincoln this morning.

Croft Street is our spiritual home, as we staged our first production there in 2001, and we rent a space in the centre for storing our costumes. News of the fire and the resulting damage is really heartbreaking.

The silver lining is that the part of the building where we store costumes was undamaged and we think our costume store has escaped unscathed.

However we do want to do all we can to support the centre and help get it back to normal so if you have any ideas or offers of help please get in touch.

Obviously we will have to find an alternative venue for our fundraising quiz in November - watch this space.

25th August 2013

Shahrazad Sasha Drennan
Dinarzad, sister to Shahrazad Marea Reid
Vizier, father of the two sisters John Leighton
King Shahrayar Jez Ashberry

Other parts will be played by: Alison Clubley, Andy Mitchell, Bob Shirley, Brenda Hartley, Chris Matthews, Christine Walker, Christopher Adams, Dave Lintin, Janet Marshall, Jenna Starar, John Kirsopp, Jose Bruce, Karen Ryan, Kate Bartlett, Kevin Brown, Martin Noble, Naomi Watkins, Ruth Andrews, Sheila Thomas and Vicky Ashberry.

Arabian Nights will be staged at Lincoln Drill Hall from 13th to 15th March 2014.

DON'T MISS OUR QUIZ NIGHT!
25th August 2013

We will be staging our first ever quiz night in November to raise much needed funds for the company.

Everyone is welcome to take part in the quiz on Saturday 9th November 2013 at Croft Street Community Centre in Lincoln.

AUDITIONS FOR ARABIAN NIGHTS
9th July 2013

Auditions for Arabian Nights adapted by Dominic Cooke will be held on Tuesday 16th July 2013 at the Royal Naval Association Club, Coulson Road, Lincoln LN6 7BG.

This will be our spring production in the main auditorium of Lincoln Drill Hall and will be staged from 13th to 15th March 2014.

Originally performed by a cast of nine playing a total of 50 roles, our production will involve a larger cast across a range of ages (minimum 16 years, no maximum - people of all ages will be needed), although most people will have more than one role.

Any specialist skills such as juggling, acrobatics, puppetry, dancing or making music would be welcome.

The story itself is well known: it is wedding night in the palace of King Shahrayar. By morning the new Queen Shahrazad is to be put to death, like a thousand young brides before her. She has one gift that could save her - the gift of story telling, including the tales of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and The Seven Voyages of Es-Sindibad the Sailor.

Principal characters include:

Females: Shahrazad (acting age range 20-28), Dinarzad (younger sister of Shahrazad)
Males: Shahrayar (acting age range 25-35), Vizier (50+), Sinbad (50+)
Ali Baba (35+)

If you would like to audition please wear comfortable clothes as you will be moving about! If you can't make 16th July please please email the director, Su Toogood, for details of alternative dates.

PLEASE NOTE EARLIER START TIME FOR ANNUAL MEETING
9th July 2013

Please note that our annual meeting starts at 7pm on Wednesday 10th July.

CAST ANNOUNCED FOR TWO
22nd June 2013

We're pleased to announce the cast for our autumn production of 'Two' by Jim Cartwright.

There was a very strong turnout at the audition on 9th June and some excellent performances, so our director Gaynor Little had a really difficult choice to make.

The part of the landlord has gone to Colin Brimblecombe, a well known and very talented actor who will be making his Common Ground debut in this play. The role of the landlady will be taken by Juli Charlton, who appeared in our very first production back in 2001. Between them the two actors will play all 14 of the characters who appear in the play.

Thanks to all who took part in the audition. The play can be seen in The Room Upstairs at Lincoln Drill Hall from Thursday 10th to Saturday 12th October 2013. Tickets will be available soon from the Lincoln Drill Hall box office - 01522 873894.

AUDITIONS FOR TWO
6th June 2013

Auditions take place this Sunday 9th June at 7.30pm for our autumn production of 'Two' by Jim Cartwright. Meet in the Function Room, The Victoria, Union Road, Lincoln LN1 3BJ.

This is described on our website as 'a microcosm of working-class life in a Northern pub in the 80s, a place of failed aspirations and unfulfilled lives'.

The play was written as a two-hander for a landlord and landlady who portray another 12 characters between them. Gaynor would prefer a couple able to appear age 30+.

Performance dates are Thursday 10th to Saturday 12th October 2013

If you are interested in auditioning but unable to attend on 9th June, or if you would like to see the script beforehand, please email our secretary, Su Toogood.

DATE ANNOUNCED FOR ANNUAL MEETING
27th April 2013

We will be staging our annual meeting at 7pm on Wednesday 10th July 2013 in the function room at the Victoria pub on Union Road, Lincoln.

This is the meeting where we decide on future productions and venues, and there will also be a vote to elect members of the committee.

Everyone is welcome to attend and if you're interested you can also stand for election to our committee. The posts which are elected each year are Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and two Ordinary Members. If you would like to stand for election please email our secretary, Su Toogood.

The bar will be open so you can enjoy a beer or a glass of wine during the meeting!

GOOD SHOW, JEEVES!
29th March 2013

Our spring production of Carry On, Jeeves - a world premiere! - was very well received and a great success thanks to the hard work and dedication of all those involved. Around 400 people saw the show at the Drill Hall, including two members of the PG Wodehouse Society who have both written reviews of the production.

Special mention must go to Jason Hippisley as Bertie Wooster for pulling off the biggest part of his life and learning all those lines!

AUTUMN 2013 PRODUCTION
9th February 2013

Thanks to everyone who voted to decide which play we will be staging in the autumn. The members opted for Two by Jim Cartwright, which will be directed by our founder member Gaynor Little.

The play, which follows the fortunes of a couple who run a northern pub and the regulars they serve from behind the bar, can be seen in The Room Upstairs at Lincoln Drill Hall from 10th until 12th October 2013.

An announcement about auditions for Two will be made soon. If you would like to hear about the auditions but don't currently receive our newsletters please send an email to our secretary, Su Toogood, and ask to be added to the mailing list.

We now have plans in place for our next five productions!

Arabian Nights March 2014
Private Lives June 2014
In Camera Autumn 2014

GENERAL MEETING
19th January 2013

There was a reasonable turnout at our general meeting on Tuesday 15th January 2013 given the bad weather. Full minutes are available from our secretary Su Toogood - please send her an email if you would like to receive these.

We are still looking for a small-scale, small-cast play and a director for our slot in The Room Upstairs at Lincoln Drill Hall in October 2013. Email Su Toogood if you have a suggestion and would like to volunteer.

Based on Ovid's tale of the same name it tells the story of Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics, who makes a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering that he can turn Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a refined society lady merely by teaching her how to speak with an upper class accent and training her in etiquette. In the process Higgins grows fonder of Eliza than he had expected...

Summer BBQ at Croft Street Community Centre – 22nd July 2007

If you would like to come, if you would like to perform or if you can help to sell tickets please call Jez and Vicky on Lincoln 826113.

Football Cards

We will be buying ‘lucky dip’ football cards for members to sell to family, friends and workmates. Jez and Vicky will be handing out the cards so expect a phone call or a visit!

Sponsorship

Su and Maurice are currently seeking corporate sponsorship for Pygmalion. From autumn 2007 we will have a co-ordinated approach to corporate sponsorship enabling us to offer an attractive package to local businesses.

Common Ground Patrons

We will soon be writing to members and supporters of Common Ground inviting them to become patrons. Our patrons will receive advance notice, tickets and programmes for all our productions and an acknowledgement in the programme of every show.

THE COARSE ACTING SHOW
20th August 2006

Though I say it myself The Coarse Acting Show at the Broadbent Theatre in Wickenby in July was great fun and thoroughly enjoyed by those who took part and by most people who saw it.

Unfortunately ticket sales couldn't match The Darling Buds of May and we did lose quite a bit of money on it - more than £800 in fact.

Nevertheless we've had some great feedback and it was good to do a real comedy for a change. For more information about the show, photographs, press reviews etc click here.

THE DARLING BUDS OF MAY
18th March 2006

Our latest production was a great success - for the first time in our short history we sold out the venue every night and the audience response seemed very favourable. This was our first visit to the Broadbent Theatre in Wickenby and I think it's fair to say that we will definitely be going back in the future. Congratulations to all concerned.

BILLY LIAR WELL RECEIVED
2nd November 2005

Our production of Billy Liar at the Millennium Festival Studio Theatre went down very well. We had a positive review in the Lincolnshire Echo, we attracted a total audience of almost 200 and we think we more or less broke even financially.

Click here to find out more about the production.
